Brett Favre: My Favorite Sports Hot Mess Story
Why is Brett Favre such a hot mess? Perhaps the better question is, why does his hot mess-ness fascinate me so much? I suppose it's all human nature. It's hard to turn away from a train wreck. I love football but admittedly don't know a lot about contracts and such--but I simply don't get it. How come the man is allowed to keep his team hostage? Why can he just hang out and miss training came and come back IF he is healthy? Shouldn't he have determined that prior to the start of training camp?!
My fascination with this story started with the Men's Journal article that quoted Favre's agent, Bus Cook, describing the quarterback as a "drama queen." This is some juicy stuff. Wait one second: What the heck kind of name is Bus Cook? Sorry. Back on topic. Cook says that Favre talks to the media too much and needs to be quiet and figure out what he is doing. Ouch.
Cook's comments were so fantastic I have to share them with you:
“Brett talked to goddamned Ed Werder at ESPN, says he needs ankle surgery. Now why did he do that?” Cook asked. “I’ve got [Brad] Childress calling. I’ve got reporters calling all damn morning. Goddammit, why does he have to be such a goddamned drama queen? Play, don’t play, goddamn, people are getting sick of it. I’m getting sick of it*!
“Why does he have to talk to these people? What good does it do? Ed Werder at ESPN! What’s he ever done for anybody other than say, ‘Look, look, Mommy, I got this first, ain’t I special?’ You got problems with surgery, talk to your wife. Why talk to goddamned Ed Werder?”
*This is my favorite part of the interview.
Has this sort of tirade by an agent ever happened in the history of sports? Can you imagine how frustrated Cook must have been to spill the beans on his client like that?
To provide some insight into how Cook became so feed up with Favre, Brett reacted to the article and the comments. By talking to the media. While doing so, he disclosed that he has gained 14 pounds since January of this year. What?! He said this when the Vikings' training camp was just days away--when was he planning on losing this said weight?!
I love the spectacle and insanity of it all. To illustrate just how out of hand the situation has become, ESPN has a portion of its website called "Favre Watch" on its mobile website.
It is weeks after the release of this interview and Brett Favre STILL has not made a decision. Which, I can't lie, almost makes me love him. It is one of the craziest stories I have ever watched unfold, and I have no idea why the Vikings and the NFL are allowing it, but Brett is making this all work for him. There is even talk of him getting an increased amount in his contract. By hanging out at home, eating Doritos, not reporting to camp, and not revealing if he will play this season or not. That takes some balls. But it's kind of genius.
